George Mason University has entered into a five-year research collaboration with PerkinElmer Inc. to jointly create a state-of-the-art platform for the early detection of lung, breast and ovarian cancers.

Dr. Lance Liotta and Dr. Emanuel Petricoin of the College of Science's Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine have teamed up with scientists from PerkinElmer's Life and Analytical Sciences Division to develop proteomics technology capable of measuring rare and small protein fragments in the blood, which may represent potential biomarkers of disease states.

Petricoin and Liotta have already discovered an archive of protein fragments in the blood, some of which are indeed predictive of early stage cancers. This cooperative and entrepreneurial collaboration will couple the Mason researchers’ expertise in the area of biomarkers and proteomics with PerkinElmer's technology to push the boundaries of the emerging field of personalized medicine.
